If you're anything like me, you've probably found yourself standing outside under a gorgeous full moon with a candle in one hand, a notebook in the other, and one very important question running through your mind:

"Wait... is this the moon where I release things... or the one where I bring things in?"

I ask myself this far more often than I'd like to admit.

The truth is that moon magic doesn't have to be complicated. Different traditions place different emphasis on the lunar phases, and there is no universal rulebook that every practitioner follows. But if you're looking for an easy way to remember the basics, here's the system that has helped me.

The Simplest Way to Remember

Think about what the Moon is doing in the sky.

🌑 New Moon = Empty Sky, Empty Cup

The Moon has disappeared from view. It is a blank slate.

When something is empty, there's room to fill it.

New Moon = Bring things in.

New beginnings.
New opportunities.
New habits.
New relationships.
New goals.

You're planting seeds that will grow over the coming weeks.

🌕 Full Moon = Completely Full

The Moon has reached her peak.

She's full.

There's no more room to add anything.

So instead...

The Full Moon is when you empty the cup.

Release.
Let go.
Forgive.
Cleanse.
End cycles.
Celebrate everything you've already grown.

Once I started thinking of it this way, I stopped mixing them up.

New Moon fills the cup.
Full Moon empties the cup.

Simple.

What About the Waxing and Waning Moon?

The magic doesn't stop with the New and Full Moon.

Each phase has its own personality.

🌒 Waxing Moon — Grow It

The Moon is getting bigger.

So should your intentions.

Excellent for:

  • Prosperity

  • Love

  • Confidence

  • Career growth

  • Building friendships

  • Healing

  • Learning new skills

  • Increasing creativity

  • Growing a business

Think of this as watering the seeds you planted during the New Moon.

🌖 Waning Moon — Reduce It

The Moon is shrinking.

Now imagine unwanted things shrinking with her.

Perfect for:

  • Banishing negativity

  • Breaking bad habits

  • Releasing grief

  • Ending toxic relationships

  • Protection work

  • Cleansing

  • Cord-cutting

  • Removing energetic blocks

Anything you wish to lessen or remove pairs naturally with the waning Moon.

Moon Phase Spell Ideas

These are simple ideas that can easily be adapted to fit your own magical practice.

🌑 New Moon Spell: Planting Intentions

You'll need:

  • White or green candle

  • Small piece of paper

  • Pen

  • Small pot of soil (optional)

Write down three things you'd like to welcome into your life.

Fold the paper toward yourself three times.

Light your candle.

Read each intention aloud.

If you have a flower pot or garden, bury the paper beneath the soil as a symbolic seed. If not, tuck it somewhere safe until the Full Moon.

Finish by saying:

"May these intentions grow in wisdom, patience, and perfect timing."

🌒 Waxing Moon Spell: Growth Candle

Use:

  • Green, gold, or blue candle

  • Cinnamon (optional)

  • Small amount of oil

Dress the candle from the base toward the wick to symbolize drawing energy upward.

Focus on one goal already in motion.

As the candle burns, visualize that goal steadily expanding—not overnight, but day by day.

🌕 Full Moon Spell: Release Ritual

You'll need:

  • Fire-safe bowl

  • Paper

  • White candle

Write everything you are ready to leave behind.

Old fears.

Old stories.

Old resentment.

Old habits.

Read each one aloud.

Then safely burn the paper.

As the smoke rises, imagine the emotional weight lifting with it.

Finish by thanking yourself for carrying those burdens as long as you did—and for choosing not to carry them any longer.

🌕 Full Moon Spell: Charging Magical Tools

Many practitioners also view the Full Moon as a time of heightened magical energy.

Place items in moonlight overnight such as:

  • Crystals

  • Tarot or oracle decks

  • Spell candles

  • Jewelry

  • Ritual tools

  • Moon water (using clean, potable water in a covered or appropriate container)

As you arrange them, take a quiet moment to reflect on the purpose each item serves in your practice. Rather than asking the Moon to "fill" them with power, think of this as dedicating your tools through mindful intention.

🌖 Waning Moon Spell: Sweeping Away What No Longer Serves

This is one of my favorite practical rituals because it combines mundane cleaning with magical symbolism.

Open a window if possible.

Starting at the back of your home, sweep or vacuum toward the front door.

As you work, quietly repeat:

"Out goes stagnant energy.
Out goes fear.
Out goes doubt.
Only peace remains."

When finished, empty the dustpan or vacuum outside if practical, or dispose of the debris with the intention of letting go.

Sometimes magic looks a lot like cleaning the house with purpose.

One Final Trick You'll Probably Remember

If your memory is as unreliable as mine when it comes to moon phases, try this little phrase:

🌑 New Moon = New Things.

🌕 Full Moon = Full Circle.

The New Moon begins the story.

The Full Moon finishes the chapter.

Everything else helps you build—or release—along the way.

And if you ever find yourself staring up at the Moon wondering, "Now what was I supposed to be doing again?"

Don't worry.

You're in good company. I still ask myself that question too.
